ABSTRACT

In this essay, I argue that phenomenology and pragmatism should be read as important resources for each other. After arguing that technical definitions of each discourse are not only hard to come by but also likely to prevent serious engagement (due to the overriding disagreements in method and core commitments), I contend for a “big-tent” approach such that the two discourses help each other to enact humility in light of lived realities. Then, I conclude with suggestions of philosophical areas where a pragmatic phenomenology is likely to be especially fruitful.
