ABSTRACT

A brief overview of pragmatist theories of truth, with an emphasis on the work of Charles S. Peirce and William James. Pragmatists reject traditional objectivist notions of truth. Consequently, assuming there is still a role to be played by truth, a key challenge becomes that of developing a new conception of truth without falling into relativism, subjectivism, or a directionless instrumentalism. Attention is given to what inspired the pragmatists, the main tenets of their views on truth, as well as some key objections and responses.
