ABSTRACT

Since its initiation in 2012, Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign has made a deep impression on all spheres of Chinese politics – including the powerful People’s Liberation Army. Never before has an anti-corruption drive hit the Chinese military this hard. By the end of 2017, 69 high-level military chiefs have been arrested, among which include two former Central Military Commission vice chairmen who once wielded enormous power. In Xi Jinping’s charge against the military, character assassination played an important role in turning public opinion against corruption suspects and garnering popular support for the Chinese leader. This chapter investigates the attacker, medium and techniques employed in the Chinese military’s anti-corruption campaign.
