ABSTRACT

Superhero play in its broadest sense is very popular and can be observed in most early years settings in many guises. We may observe children engaging in fantasy play, taking on the role of a specific character, or roughhousing with their friends. They could be creating weapons from construction materials or recreating a small-world scene with a toy fire engine where firefighters are rescuing people from a burning building. Superheroes are likely to be among us within children’s play for a long time to come and should not be viewed as a problem. Superhero play can also be a doorway into talking about heroism and the attributes and qualities that we want to foster in our lives. We can share with children stories about real-life heroes and encourage them to undertake their own heroic acts albeit on a smaller scale. Encourage them to be good friends and demonstrate superpowers such as resilience and courage.
