ABSTRACT

Early years providers serve arguably the most vulnerable and impressionable members of society. Early years providers already focus on children’s personal social and emotional development. The early years foundation stage framework supports early years providers to do this in an age appropriate way, through ensuring children learn right from wrong, mix and share with other children and value other’s views, know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes. Relating with others in a variety of ways is essential to human life. First, as a baby being nurtured and cared for, then learning the complexities of ongoing relationships with family and friends. Sometimes superhero play can become merely a re-enactment of the inevitable “chase” or “fight” scene. This usually occurs where the children are developmentally ready for accepting new information or structure into their play but are finding it difficult to take this next step by themselves.
