ABSTRACT

Getting the learning environment right is an essential component of an effective early years setting. One of the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage in the United Kingdom is that: “Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers”. Most settings involve children who have an interest in popular culture and superhero play so this is a good place to start. It might be helpful to think about the learning environment as mirroring the ethos around how young children should learn. Some Canadian research found that antisocial behaviour and violent play reduces when there are more manipulable materials available in the environment. There are some super resources available to support educators in our role; however, perhaps the best resources are the simplest.
