ABSTRACT

This chapter draws upon my experience of working as practitioner specialising in prosecuting and defending in high-profile fraud cases. After working for the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General in the early 1980’s, I set up the first fraud and regulation team at a City firm, Stephenson Harwood, in 1988. I was subsequently a partner at Simon Muirhead and Burton from 1994 to 2006, and during my time as a defence solicitor I defended clients in early Serious Fraud Office cases, most notably Guinness and Blue Arrow, as well as in many other complex fraud investigations. In 2006, I was appointed Director of the Fraud Prosecution Service, a division of the Crown Prosecution Service, and from 2009 to 2014 I was Chief Criminal Counsel at the Financial Services Authority. After leaving the Financial Services Authority I became a partner at McGuireWoods London LLP until 2018, when I joined RS Legal Strategy.
