ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an incident that illustrates much of what transpired in mainstream lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) activism in the United States in the twenty-first century. For most of the twenty-first century, LGBTQ funders, national LGBTQ organizations, and the state-wide equality groups made the legalization of same-sex marriage the number one priority on their "gay agenda". On June 26, 2015, their work came to fruition with the US Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex couples have the right to marry. The chapter offers some context about the current state of LGBTQ activism, and discusses issues to consider about its future. "Gay issues" have been determined by LGBTQ funders with the most resources and for whom the inability to get married was the only real form of discrimination they faced. The chapter finally provides an overview of the contents of this book.
