ABSTRACT

This chapter is a transcript of excerpts from a series of interviews with Cara Page, discussing her work as the Executive Director of the Audre Lorde Project from 2012 to 2017. The interviews were conducted over the course of several years, with the final one being conducted after Cara presented at the 2016 After Marriage conference. The Audre Lorde Project (ALP) is a lesbian, gay, bisexual, two-spirit, trans and gender non-conforming people of color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area. The organization focuses on mobilization, education and capacity-building, working for community wellness and progressive social and economic justice. The interview provides examples of important work that is largely ignored by the mainstream equality organizations. It also explains the difference between equality and justice, and how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) activism looks differently when it prioritizes one or the other.
