ABSTRACT

This chapter shows an interview with Jennicet Gutierrez and Jorge Gutierrez, two staff members of the organization Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement (Familia: TQLM). Familia: TQLM is the only national organization that addresses, organizes, educates, and advocates for the issues most important to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) and Latino communities. In this interview, conducted after Jennicet and Jorge presented at the After Marriage conference, they discuss their work with trans and queer immigrants. They focus on their campaigns to end the detention and abuse of trans and gender nonconforming people being held in detention centers run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). They discuss the importance of doing both local organizing and national advocacy, and building coalitions. They also address a controversial incident where Jennicet interrupted President Barack Obama at his Pride Reception, as well as the challenges of organizing under a Donald Trump administration.
