ABSTRACT

When William Doll visited China in 2007, one of the Chinese hosts, a middle school principal, called him the "King of Chaos" after Doll finished a keynote conference presentation on his post-modern pedagogy. After the principal explained why he thought of Doll as the King of Chaos, Doll was immediately fascinated by the story of the monkey king and loved his new nickname in China. One of the most frequently asked questions Doll received during the trip was the ways to directly apply the four R's relational, rich, recursive, and rigorous to practical classroom situations in the Chinese public schooling system. Doll ended his reflection paper upon this trip with the first school the scholars visited in the summer of 2007. In conference, Doll engaged with the multiple Chinese audiences of complexity and chaos theories in education through academic presentations, conference forums and discussions, personal communications and school visits.
