ABSTRACT

With the increasing global push to publish in English for scholars across disciplines, graduate students and faculty in Algeria are no exceptions. At Algerian institutions of higher education, there is a strong rationale to develop research publication skills in English for both novice and experienced researchers, with an added pressure as the amount of publications in indexed journals has become a major assessment criterion for graduation. In this chapter, we present an analysis of data gathered from MA students’ experiences with research writing in English, including a focus on their stated future publication intentions. Findings suggest that writing instruction delivered to novice scholars is still traditional, with a theory-practice divide, and that attention should be given to a reflexive evaluation of and for learning with these scholars who are looking to publish in multiple languages. Building on these findings, we conclude by suggesting a research publication course for MA students.
