ABSTRACT

This paper describes an intensive writing English for research publication purposes (ERPP) workshop for seasoned scholars at the University of Iceland. The workshop was developed in response to a mixed method study of almost 300 members of the faculty at the University of Iceland. The study revealed that despite great pressure to publish in English language journals, the university provided no writing support. This lack of explicit ERPP instruction was especially problematic for those who had received their education in non-Anglophone countries. The study also revealed a lack of agency and limited English academic genre awareness, despite advance level English proficiency among Icelandic academics. This chapter outlines an ERPP workshop that was implemented in response to these study findings, guided by a critical-pragmatic pedagogical approach that includes both genre-based instruction as well as examining ways to take a critical stance on international knowledge production.
