ABSTRACT

The use of insecticides for controlling adult mosquitoes introduces occupational hazards and health risks to workers involved in handling and application tasks. The main hazard to operator health is direct chemical exposure, especially during mixing and loading. Training, personal protective equipment, and use of appropriate material are of paramount importance for reducing the exposure of workers to pesticides. The aim of this chapter is to review the treatment scenarios and biological monitoring data dealing with the exposure of applicators to insecticides during adulticide treatments. Occupational exposure modeling focused on adult mosquito control has also been analyzed. Our review shows that it is absolutely necessary to set precise scenarios corresponding to the different practices in vector control and to develop specific occupational exposure models for workers in mosquito control.
