ABSTRACT

In recent years, risk management has become a central issue for health and safety in workplace. Risk management comprises the whole process of risk identification, estimation, evaluation, reduction and control. Risk communication, as a field of interest, is closely related to risk perception or awareness. Early studies in risk perception were aimed at finding explanations for individual differences in risk perception and the determinants of those differences. Risk communication has long been based on the idea that, strictly top-down, it is essential to teach the public to synchronize their perceptions with expert opinions. From the definition of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), it stems that there is a variety of organizations falling within this category, some with more and some with less capabilities to invest on risk communication. Printed material will typically include text with illustrations. If a visual representation of risk is overwhelming, compared to text message used, then this type of communication is categorized as visual representation.
