ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to show how the number of usual residents in the Netherlands ultimo September 2010 is estimated. It presents a procedure to estimate the total population of usual residents, where it tackles the problem that none of sources measures residence duration accurately. The chapter discusses the assumptions and how to meet them in application of the method. Two significant developments have to be mentioned to explain changes in the number of non-registered usual residents between 2000 and 2010. The first is the decline of the number of asylum seekers between 2000 and 2010. The other one is the sharp rise of the migrant workforce from the year 2006, in particular from Eastern Europe, who did not register themselves in the population register. In 2006 this number was 121,000 and this number increased to 182,000 in 2010. The chapter finally presents the results of the capture-recapture estimation.
