ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the role of clean energy sources in agri-food processing as a means of enhancing sustainable food security. In this context, specific applications of solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy in agriculture are discussed, and some emerging opportunities of clean energy applications in food processing have been highlighted. The chapter discusses the present status and scope of clean energy technologies and its inevitable linkage with food security. Large-scale installations of clean energy technologies are very costly as compared to incumbent technologies, such as conventional resources. Therefore, nowadays, the clean technology fund (CTF) helps in empowering transformation in developing countries by providing resources to scale up the demonstration, deployment, and transfer of clean energy technologies with a significant potential for saving long-term greenhouse gas emissions. The major constraints impeding the use of clean energy technologies in the agri-food processing sector are policy, regulatory, technical, and financial barriers.
