ABSTRACT

The additional increase in agricultural demand for bioenergy is considered as a threat to food security. The other view is that bioenergy can be considered as a driver for increase in agricultural production and productivity, which may result in rural development and poverty reduction. Several nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have criticized the conversion of food to fuel because a lot of people worldwide are still suffering from malnutrition. The Bioenergy and Food Security Project are initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, with funding from the Government of Germany, to develop technical understanding of impacts of bioenergy development on food security. The additional increase in agricultural demand for bioenergy is considered as a threat to food security. The impact of increase in utilization of land for bioenergy production needs to be analyzed before its allocation, and therefore energy policy decisions of developing countries play an important role.
