ABSTRACT

Electrodeposition or electrosynthesis of any material is dependent on the electrochemical window of the electrolyte, the electrode material, the bath temperature, additives, and the electrochemical parameters, to mention the most important pertinent properties. This chapter starts with ionic liquids almost few years ago, it was a certain surprise that the electrochemical behavior is not only far away from the one of the aqueous or organic electrolytes, and founds those ionic liquids can influence electrochemical reactions. The electrodeposition of Al from three different ionic liquids having all the same anion showed that in two of them nanocrystalline Al was obtained, whereas in the other one, under all conditions, a microcrystalline Al was obtained. The interactions between a solute and the respective ionic liquid, both of them with the interface, and the influence of temperature and electrode potential on these interactions are far from being deeply understood.
