ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 discusses the formation and properties of weathered rock that is commonly found in tropical areas of the world. The discussion includes physical, chemical and biological weathering processes, the effects of topography on weathering, and typical weathering products related to lithology. Examples of weathering profiles in granite, basalt, metamorphic, shale, sandstone/shale formations and carbonate rocks are provided. Typical slope stability conditions in weathered rock are discussed.
