ABSTRACT

This chapter was originally written between 2002 and 2004 with co-author Alain Verstraete. An extensive internet search revealed that there are only a relative few devices developed by major diagnostic companies and a plethora of private label devices made by OEM manufacturers. In the marketing and advertising materials for many of the less expensive bulk purchased devices, there is no information regarding the actual manufacturer of the device and it is difficult to determine whether these devices offer varying technical advantages or whether they are essentially all the same. POCT roadside controls by police using alternative matrices such as oral fluid have generally only been performed on an experimental basis, although legislation enacted in Australia authorizes police to perform roadside oral fluid tests for cannabis, methamphetamine, and methylenedioxymethamphetamine using POCT devices.
