ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of Between Socrates and Christ, a collection of essays published by EDIPUCRS. According to Álvaro Luiz Montenegro Valls, the reasons for which the study of Kierkegaard's work was historically impaired were, on one hand, the lack of a more logical and systematic vision of the work and the pseudonyms and, on the other, difficulties in translation. Valls analyzes love according to Ernst Tugendhat, Freud, Kierkegaard, and Kant. Upon announcing his return to religious studies, he introduces a concept of religiousness, which has as its fundamental characteristic the aesthetic aspect, since it helps to compose a profile with good taste: "The new religiousness has an aesthetic accent; it is a lifestyle, and not a moral, ethical or political commitment". In Valls' view, Kierkegaard's pseudonym Johannes Climacus has the same opinion, since he affirms that it is not up to the intellect to overcome faith, but, if anything, to beg God for help before attempting its proof.
