ABSTRACT

Entrepreneurship in the healthcare sector has received increased attention over the last two decades, both in terms of scholarly research and number of innovative enterprises. In this chapter, we report the findings of a systematic review of studies of entrepreneurs in the healthcare sector. Whereas original studies were focused on nurse and physician entrepreneurs, newer works in the area are concerned with issues related to the management of new business models and technologies of new enterprises. These topics open up avenues for nurturing entrepreneurship in this sector through both education and policy. Building on this trend, we propose a multi-level framework (micro, meso, and macro) and specify which cross-disciplinary efforts are needed to advance understanding of how healthcare professionals and entrepreneurs discover opportunities and start viable and innovative businesses.
