ABSTRACT

In Chapter 20, “Misuse, Recreational Use, and Addiction in Relation to Prescription Medicines”, Francesco S. Bersani and Claudio Imperatori discuss the emergence of clinically efficacious prescription drugs given to treat symptoms as diverse as pain, anxiety, sleep, anaesthesia, learning difficulties, mood issues, and cognitive problems is accompanied by the potential for misuse. They discuss how the use of scheduled medication with alcohol or co-ingestion is presented clinically and why the phenomenon of prescription drug abuse and NPS is a serious public health concern and linked to the emergence of the NPS phenomenon.
