ABSTRACT

In the light of this advocacy the proposal had little difficulty in identifying the area for research – in-service teacher education. “In recent years, an increasing number of in-service courses has been made available for teachers facing the issues and problems of teaching in a multiracial society." The multiracial characteristics of Britain have become increasingly evident in work in schools, in community, entertainment and every aspect of everyday life. The evidence is equally clear about the substantial potential demand for in-service courses for preparing teachers to work in a multicultural society. This chapter also explores the specific purpose of the courses, the ways in which they are planned to achieve these purposes and the ensuing experiences of course members. The consequences of the courses examined are, inevitably, some of the most elusive results of our study. Teachers still displayed a tendency to ‘leave it to the experts’, particularly in the areas of language, assessment and attainment.
