ABSTRACT

The ‘acceptance’ that is asked for in the series of objectives under Section A on my list entail acceptance of a specific set of propositions about the multicultural society as it is today, nor a particular construction of political reality. The ‘hidden curriculum’ located it as either a soft option; or at best, as a source of tips for dealing with some rather peculiar children that you might be unlucky enough to meet on teaching practice, and/or as an ornamental addition to the College reference for employers. The document begins with a statement of ‘the professional responsibilities of a teacher in a multiracial society’; this emphasises that the student teacher is an autonomous individual capable of independent decision-making and free commitment to ethical standards.
