ABSTRACT

Any discussion of the multicultural curriculum cannot ignore the fact that all curriculum development occurs within a society of endemic racism. ethnic origin, its main considerations are intended to be applicable to all schools. There seems little doubt that teachers play a vital role in sustaining prevailing definitions of the value content of the curriculum. Teachers need to be sensitively informed about the cultures and social structures within their own school community, and to adopt an open acceptance of difference. While children need to be encouraged to be more language conscious so that they can be confident in their mode of expression, teachers also need to be sensitively aware of their own use of language. The colourful and exotic aspects of multiculturalism must be considered carefully. The acceptance and encouragement of diversity as the norm of human progress have to replace existing educational norms if the concept of multiculturalism is to have any impact.
