ABSTRACT

The form of the contribution which teacher education in any area should make to ‘Teaching in a Multicultural Society’ will reflect both the general responsibilities and duties of LEAs, and the particular characteristics of the community within the scope of an LEA. Through the curriculum a school or college sets out its programme of learning, and indicates the standards which it expects the learners to reach. The curriculum indicates what is to be learnt and relates this to the characteristics of the learners, which includes their abilities, their attitudes and their cultural backgrounds. In the UK many reports of value have been prepared, but frequently in fairly general terms. The pattern of home-school activity can be affected greatly by the various inherent attitudes of minority-group families, and the views traditionally held in their home countries of the place of education in society, of the role of schools, and of the responsibilities to be carried by teachers.
