ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the attempts of one secondary school to work towards a social climate where bullying is recognised as unacceptable throughout the school, amongst both children and adults, and where sanctions come from group work with the children concerned. Valuing children and doing the bullying surveys were developments that were welcomed by parents. Parents are very concerned about bullying, especially when their 11 or 12 year old is just starting in the secondary school. One of the major features of victims of bullying is a tendency to lack self-confidence and self-esteem. The sanctions against bullying have to emerge from the views of the children involved themselves, supported by the adults. Many teachers see the academic achievement of children as being very important, and these surveys also helped to point out to staff that if a child is very upset about bullying then they are not going to learn very effectively in the classroom.
