ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on undertaking research with older people and provides guidance for researchers intending to work with this group. Despite existence of physical activity recommendations for older people, the prevalence of physical activity, and decrease of sedentary behaviour, among older people in Western countries remains low. Strategies to optimize engagement in physical activity are suggested, with a consideration of potential contextual factors of ageism, environment and culture. The subjective and objective measurement tools available for data collection in older people are critiqued. Evidence gaps and future research opportunities are highlighted to encourage greater levels of physical activity amongst older people and promote effective evaluation.
