ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the experiences of young adult women who experience positive embodiment and the influence their mothers had on their experiences of their bodies. The voice of connection was used as women reflected on their heritage and their intergenerational narrative as women. This voice stands in opposition to the voice of silencing or idealized femininity, demonstrating their pride and joy in their embodied identities, physicality, and strength. All of the mothers used the voice of connection when speaking about their daughters. Further research about intergenerational journeys of embodiment is needed with larger and more diverse samples, to explore nonbiological mother-daughter dyads and to explore in more depth the role of spirituality as a protective factor. While the importance of understanding what predicts and contributes to eating disorders must continue, the focus on identifying mothers as contributing factors has unfortunately vilified the role of the mother, further contributing to "mother-blaming".
