ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the way to "personal sustainability" and why we think that something like personal sustainability is very important for the theoretical discussion of sustainable development and furthermore for its implementation and realisation. It addresses sustainable development in terms of an object or points at objects of sustainable or unsustainable development. Additionally, sustainable development is normally discussed as a matter of the outer world, the world surrounding us human beings but not as a matter of our inner world. To foster the transformation to sustainability – the last reason for dealing with personal sustainability that will be mentioned here – there is a need to bridge the gap between theory and practice, knowing and living, and thinking and acting. Even if personal sustainability is not introduced as a research field and categorical and programmatic part of sustainable development by others so far, there are some authors who have used the term "personal sustainability" in their research in different contexts.
