ABSTRACT

China has the largest population of people who are blind in the world at 5 million people. While this figure constitutes 18 percent of the total global population of people who are blind, it represents a mere 0.4 percent of the Chinese population. This chapter proceeds from the social model of disability whereby disability is recognised as existing within the structures and cultures of society rather than within an individual's damaged body. The notion of corporate social responsibility (CSR) began appearing in China's public discourse in the late 1990s and is now a familiar topic in policy forums, academic research and social media. Social media and internet companies also play a significant role in CSR development in China, especially when the CSR is oriented towards the community of people with disabilities. It has been argued that China's integration into the global economic order has brought many opportunities but also responsibilities for Chinese companies.
