ABSTRACT

In recent years, the China-based social media platforms have become a widely adopted communication measure of the Chinese diaspora in Australia. According to the data collected by interviews, most of the respondents in this research either adopted China-based social media platforms before they migrated to Australia, or got to know these platforms in Australia through their Chinese friends' recommendations. The feasibility of access blockage is based on the specific condition of the internet's infrastructure in China. To a certain extent, China's internet environment is more like a big local area network rather than an internet interconnecting network. In addition to access blockage, the Chinese government also exerts content censoring on the internet which primarily relies on keyword filtering. Keyword filtering is an automated process that prevents users from distributing texts including forbidden words and phrases. Many people are now living in a highly globalised society "which is fundamentally characterised by objects in motion".
