ABSTRACT

The systematic search for verbal cues to deceit has accelerated since the 1950s resulting in several verbal veracity assessment tools including the Verifiability Approach. The core of the approach is that truth tellers will report more details that an investigator can check than liars. This chapter presents an overview of the Verifiability Approach. It discusses the underling rationale and the empirical evidence to date. That evidence suggests that the Verifiability Approach detects truth tellers and liars with about 70 percent accuracy. The chapter finishes with a discussion of the strong features of the approach.
