ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reviews the more obvious challenges to civil society sustainability, including those posed by the reduction and often removal of external funding. It provides an overview of civil society in Latin America, noting the historical dependence of civil society organisations (CSOs) on foreign funding and the impact of the significant reduction in such funds. The book argues the importance of ensuring a strong gender and diversity analysis as a component of any sustainable development activity and in ensuring sustainable and inclusive organisations. It explores how the process of reforms in Ukraine has been stymied by both the recent conflict, as well as the failure to resolve serious corruption in the government and state. The book also discusses the tensions and challenges to organisations in South Africa adjusting to a post-apartheid reality as well as a reduction in external funding.
