ABSTRACT

Competence is always an issue for early career therapists. How does one instill this quality when beginning interns want so much the approval of their supervisor and clients? The need to be liked is strong; however, one learns that having clients like you is not enough to create change and move clients toward their goals. Wavering confidence does not stop with the intern therapist; the supervisor can also question her own competency. Can I help grow this therapist? Do I have the tools, the right approach, and the necessary understanding to help this person become an effective clinician?
