ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction to Latinos of Mexican origin living in the United States and discusses the specific dementia risk factors for Mexican Americans. Beliefs and values distinct to this culture are explored, particularly as they relate to caring for elders with cognitive impairment. Also discussed are currently available evidence-based programs found to be effective with Mexican American caregivers. Finally, future directions are discussed, including possible areas for interventions that have not yet been studied, as well as new delivery methods which ideally could expand the reach of evidence-based programs to serve a larger number of caregivers effectively.
