ABSTRACT
Galaico-Portuguese developed from the Latin/Romance dialect spoken in the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula, in what had been the Roman province of Gallaecia (modern Galicia). It was brought south with the conquest of the Muslim-dominated areas, eventually replacing the southern Romance dialects.
