ABSTRACT

'Seascapes: Living with the Sea' would be held at sea over three nights and four days in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. The authors reflect elsewhere, the conference presented a first-time sailing experience and direct engagement with the sea for some, and unexpected encounters for long-time, established sailors. They often speak a common language about the sea, even though how they live with it may be different. As the metaphor at the end of this piece confirms, when it comes to living with the seas, the most significant point of all is that they are in the same boat, together. For those who chose not to swim, to stay within the safety of the vessel, or to watch from the shore, the sea still touched them in no less significant ways. The experience of learning together, of opening dialogues, or creating conversations about the sea, at sea, was profound.
