ABSTRACT
This chapter explores a different educational approach for how we might learn to live with the sea sustainably, considering an action competence model for marine education that synthesises knowledge, experience, reflection, vision for the future, values and action. Living in an island nation, New Zealanders are never very far from the sea. Impacts on Aotearoa New Zealand's marine environment are both direct and indirect. In the former case, seafood harvesting and marine pollution are the most telling, and in the latter case, sedimentation of estuaries, freshwater pollution and coastal erosion and habitat change are significant. It is clear that previous human impacts on our marine environment are unsustainable. For a numbers of years, researchers have been exploring knowledge of the marine environment, for example highlighting how children's understandings can be addressed in teaching and learning. Today's mobile learning technologies have multiple potential positive impacts for learning.
