ABSTRACT

The rationale given for having a nice single-family house in the suburbs is that it gives children room to play, fathers room to putter, mothers room to breathe, families room to learn to enjoy each other without intense pressures in terms of space. Many people like living downtown; others prefer the country; some do not like lawns and gardens and cannot stand the large numbers of children that suburban living entails; others want or need to be close to their job, or to a particular hospital, relative or even hobby. Each pupil completed the vocabulary, reading and mathematics sections of the Metropolitan Achievement Test, a self-appraisal inventory and four motor ability tests. In addition, each student was rated by the teacher in terms of eight dimensions of his/her social behaviour within the classroom, and the grade-five students completed a questionnaire on the amount of time they spent in various out-of-school activities.
