ABSTRACT

The Federation of Youth Farms and Activity Playgrounds is the central organization for playground initiatives in Germany. The youth office, social welfare office, real-estate offices, horticultural landscape offices and others are well disposed toward the venture and are extremely helpful. Other official bodies which have less directly to do with children sometimes create difficulties. Individual border gardens or the whole playground may be planted; and the horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, poultry and pigeons are all raised and cared for. The report of the Carl Schubert School for Children requiring mental care notes that some of their mentally handicapped children accompanied by teachers and helpers visited the youth farm in Elsental. Children from socially deprived or problem families are offered a chance of developing and making up for what they lack. The potential for special assistance to handicapped children has been widely recognized.
