ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the concept of wellbeing and considers various disciplines implicated in thinking about singing and wellbeing and extends the discussion of the issues surrounding the benefits and challenges of interdisciplinary work. It offers the biopsychosocial framework to consider the many constituents that might be at play in the relation between singing and wellbeing in the context of different disciplinary perspectives. The chapter deals with singing and health, cultural understanding, and intergenerational understanding, respectively. In addition to the fundamental idea of change through singing in time and spatial dimensions, each chapter in this volume deals with human behavior, practices, activities, and the like that can be read as influenced or mediated by many factors that can be categorized as biological, psychological, and sociocultural. This introduction also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
