ABSTRACT

This chapter develops, step-by-step, a logic model for understanding how singing affects our health. It traces the complex causal pathways that link singing interventions with specific musical, individual, social, and environmental mechanisms, and consequent psychological, physiological, social, and behavioral responses. It also discusses how these responses play key roles in the prevention, treatment, or management of mental and physical health conditions. This chapter also introduces the following chapters in the section, which explore in detail the effects of singing for different health conditions and populations.
