ABSTRACT

Singing can be included in music education so as to celebrate today’s pluralistic societies. This chapter utilizes the notion of sacrifice by examining the Greek folk song “Bridge of Arta” in association with the “tragic” role of Iphigenia as used in Manolis Kalomiris’ opera The Masterbuilder, and Giorgos Koumendakis’ choreodrama Iphigenia at the Bridge of Arta. It is suggested that, when explorations to “other” singing cultures are applied to songs from various cultures, they can embody not only music education but also many subjects across the school curriculum, which can free students from biases and narrow attitudes.
