ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on musical engagement and agency in relation to participants’ wellbeing in an intergenerational singing program involving secondary school students and people with dementia. While much research focuses on student musical engagement and agency, typically the years following formal education have been neglected, despite the substantial known benefits of lifelong learning and singing into the senior years. Specifically, program requirements addressing the various needs of singers with dementia within the singing program are identified. Themes relating to behavioral indicants of agency emerged, which can help researchers and practitioners facilitate agency in singing programs within different age groups.
