ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book illustrates a host of intergenerational relationships fostered through singing and how these can take on special meaning for people and their communities. It proposes that tying outcome measures to initial hypotheses will better advance understanding of the mechanisms by which singing can affect health. The book highlights characteristics of one or more cultures, together including all habitable continents of the globe. It describes initiation songs of southern Africa as ways to mobilize knowledge and norms of adult society and culture. The book offers guidelines for incorporating singing in cultural contexts leading to positive outcomes, hence suggesting transferable ideas for other contexts. It shows that the reduction of racism in public school arising from incorporating multicultural singing in a regular music program.
