Learning to Sing Naturally

This chapter introduces the first part of the volume which focuses on how singing is learned naturally and informally in various contexts throughout life. The transmission of songs and singing skills occurs in social contexts that are introduced as communities of practice where novices observe and imitate those who are more knowledgeable and skilled. Motivation for singing are explored as well as the playfulness and multimodal elements of song singing and learning. Implications for education are discussed.
