ABSTRACT

Expert musicians’ preparation for performance involves practice, memorization, and rehearsal. This chapter outlines a series of studies conducted by the author, a psychologist, and former professional singer, who undertook practice-based research using the longitudinal case study approach to discover how she developed and used performance cues when singing from memory. The findings add to the existing theoretical understanding of musicians’ long-term memory, as singers must recall words as well as music. The chapter aims to empower readers who are themselves singers to articulate and learn from their own experiences and to teach others.
